What is hand-embellishing, and why use it here?

• My hand-embellished prints contain extensive added-by-hand color. All of my embellishing is done with colored pencil, which is wonderfully delicate in texture, but bold in color. These added layers create an artwork that is intimate and luminous, particularly in person. “Twilight” is a true hybrid of a print and a drawing (see image #4 to get a sense of how the pencil layers sit into the surface of the print).

• Very atmospheric, layered paintings, like the original “Twilight” painting, don’t necessarily translate to print without losing some of their pop (this has to do with optical mixing and other color science). It is essential to me that anything I send into the world feels distinctly alive, so I wanted to create a print that had the same luminous magic of the painting. Embellishing with colored pencil is how I re-capture that aliveness in real time.

• In this case, I ended up significantly altering the moon in particular. I believe this print captures the essence of the original artwork, but also stands on its own as something new and distinct.

Printed on Canson-Arches Aquarelle 100% Cotton Rag (310gsm). This is an archival paper which is thick, sturdy and soft. The paper has delicate, softly textured surface, which hold layers of colored pencil beautifully.
